Divorce or dissolving a marriage is ending a marriage before the death of either one of the spouses.
It is different than an annulment, which is a declaration that a person's marriage is void. However, the effects of marriage can be recognized in these unions, for example a spouses support or alimony, child custody, child support, and the distribution of their property.
In some areas, a divorce must be certified by a court, because a legal action needs to dissolve the legal relationship. Terms of the divorce are determined by the courts through they may take into account prenuptial agreements or post-nuptial agreements, or simply ratify terms that the spouses have agreed to privately. The spouses often disagree on the terms of the divorce, which leads to expensive litigation. Other approaches to divorce settlements have come to light, including mediation and collaborative divorce which involves a mutually acceptable resolution to the conflict.
